Jody Loaring: Master Artisan
…”For our studio, art is as much about the integrity of the making as it is about the final vision. It was a career-defining moment for us when Jody Loaring was recognized as a Master Artisan by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship…”
Jody Loaring is recognised as a Master Artisan by the prestigious international Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, an organisation dedicated to preserving and advancing excellence in contemporary craftsmanship worldwide. The Foundation identifies master makers whose practices demonstrate exceptional skill, material knowledge, and cultural contribution within their discipline, placing Loaring within a global network of artists recognised for distinction in material-based practice.
As part of this recognition, she was selected to participate in the Homo Faber Biennale in Venice, one of the world’s leading exhibitions devoted to master craftsmanship. Her inclusion marked a significant milestone: she was among the first Australian makers presented when Australian artisans were formally introduced to the international Homo Faber platform, and the first artist from Western Australia invited to exhibit within the Biennale. This selection positioned her practice within a global curatorial context and affirmed its relevance within contemporary sculpture, fibre art, and interdisciplinary material practice.
Loaring is also listed in the international Homo Faber Guide, a curated reference platform documenting outstanding craftspeople, designers, and makers whose work demonstrates excellence in skill, originality, and artistic integrity.

Recognition by the Michelangelo Foundation is awarded through a rigorous selection process led by curators, cultural specialists, and craft experts. Inclusion is based not only on technical mastery, but also on originality of practice, depth of material understanding, and contribution to contemporary craft discourse. Within an Australian context, this level of recognition represents significant international validation and remains rare for artists working in regional contexts.
Loaring’s sculptural practice centres on the relationship between landscape, material, and memory. Working across sculpture, fibre art, and mixed media, she transforms gathered materials — including driftwood, fibres, rope, and textiles — into resolved forms that embody environmental histories and cultural traces. Her inclusion within the international Master Artisan community reflects the depth of her engagement with material process, structural integrity, and conceptual inquiry.
