The cubed base forms of the piece represent movement through the South West Tuart and Karri forests of Western Australia, a tumble with scattered eucalyptus leaves, which are depicted as the embedded copper leaves upon the forms. The layered painted imagery evokes the moments of dawn and dust at the estuary undisturbed by the movement of humanity, amongst the shallow water and reeds. The text tells us of newspaper reports from the time of the early days of settlement in Western Australia, often describing a narrative of social violence. The open woven forms hint at scattered skull fragments of shattered lives and are vessels, to carry forward the stories of injustice, hardship and sorrow. Scenic Drive tells the story of my Great, Great Grandmother Mary, who was abandoned at 3 months of age by her father in the First Settlement of Augusta in Western Australia in 1832, after he had killed her mother.
